Second Project

For this piece, I focused on the arts within the city of Philadelphia. I wanted to capture the unique cultural spirit of the arts, following my theme of understanding what makes Philadelphia so special to me. I chose to use the Philadelphia Art museum in the background, as it is a central point of art and culture within the city. It is visited by millions of people yearly, and holds great pieces of work. I then chose to use the Oldenburg Clothespin, with famous south Philly musician Jim Croce, to capture the sculptural aspect and musical aspect of the city. I used a transfer to create the faded background, then wanted to use a dark image to capture jim and oldenburgs clothespin on the front. I hope that this captured the arts in the beautiful city of Philadelphia.

  1. This work is really interesting...the art museum in the background and the figure in the foreground all play along a historical image of Philadelphia. The subject's pose is intriguing; in a way, he seems to question the viewer's gaze, like, "what are you looking at?" I have never been to Philadelphia before so I didn't recognize the building, actor, or clothespin reference as related to the city. I think in order to make this image even stronger, you could place some type of reference point to where you want the viewer to place themselves. This meaning even sliding in the word Philadelphia somewhere. Then, the building's location would ground the viewer. I think as reference to the arts, the work is successful. Also, it is aesthetically pleasing overall...the composition is balanced and calming, and the color palette is masculine and consistent.

  2. This work is really interesting to me because of the simplicity of the images put together but the over all meaning is very deep. I have never been to Philadelphia but the city seems so interesting just viewing the pieces you have created. I would recommend for this pieces that you work with the colors of the two images. Also I would trim down the sides of the image so that the borders look like a bleed print instead of having uneven white borders. Also maybe work in a way to let the view know that It is about Philadelphia. I understand that is what it is about because I know your over all theme but I don't think an outside view would understand as easily. Other than that great work and good luck with you next project.

  3. This is cool! My immediate emotional response when looking at this piece is a sense of nostalgia. Wether that was something you were going for or not, I don't know. I don't know much about Philly, but I do know Pat Croce pretty well and I know he's a big player there haha. I might have put the plate image on the far bottom left since he's pretty centered. Then, I think the large building would even stand out even more. That's just a personal critique, however I really like your piece! Nice job! :)

  4. the scale of the figure against the faded landscape of the city is really interesting, like looking at the Lincoln monument and feeling small in comparison. i like the idea of introducing text or at least titling the piece to make your message more clear

  5. I love how your focus is on Philadelphia, the city you seem to love, and the art that makes up that wonderful city. I really like this piece because the contrast between the realistic background image and the print is very high, but it is very effective. Jim Croce seems to belong there. To me, this piece looks like it could be a postcard inviting everyone to come see Philly. Well done.
